Sometimes the moment an image is captured in the camera is only the beginning. You sense some potential in the scene, the light and atmosphere when the photo is first taken. Adding a texture overlay can enhance the atmosphere and add a painterly effect to a photograph. In the example below, from left to right are thumbnails of the original image, an image of clouds and a texture purchased from Flypaper Textures.

The clouds and texture are placed in layers over the original image and different blending modes (usually overlay or softlight) are used in conjunction with different opacities to create the desired effect. The amount of effect and its placement in the image is further controlled via layer masks.


In this example a gradient map in the color blending mode was also selectively applied to parts of the image.
